Attending one of the monthly club inspections at Wildlife Prairie Park is a great way to learn more about certain beekeeping techniques, handling new situations, and observing other hives alongside both new and experienced beekeepers.
What do I need to bring?
Other than yourself, if you have protective equipment, please bring that along. There may be extra veils or suits but they may be of limited sizes. The intent is to get up close and personal with the honey bees so you are encouraged to wear whatever protection makes you most comfortable.
The club apiary manager will bring the required hive tools for the inspection. If you choose to bring any of your own hive tools, be sure that they are properly cleaned with bleach water prior to the inspection to avoid transmission of any diseases to the club hives.
Do I need to pay to get in to the park for these inspections?
No, at this time we can coordinate access without requiring to pay the gate fee as long as you only plan to attend for the inspection. If you would like to stay longer and enjoy the other amenities that Wildlife Prairie Park has to offer, please pay the gate fee upon arrival. You do need to notify Rollyn Aberle (309-645-2419) in advance that you plan to attend so he can notify the gate who to expect.
Where do I go to attend the inspection event?
The club hives are maintainted behind Hazel’s Hill. You can ask for a park map at the gate, but the map below highlights the path to Hazel’s Hill. There is parking available in the grass near the dirt lane leading up to the hives or next to them. Please do not park vehicles close to the hives to allow ample space for viewing the inspection.
